BBWP Member, Ty Nant Water, Gets the Blues

British Bottled Water Producers’ (BBWP) Member, Ty Nant - known for its iconic cobalt blue bottles - has scored another try, by signing a two year sponsorship deal with the Cardiff Blues. Ty Nant has been involved with the rugby team for the past three years but the new arrangement, guaranteeing support for the next 2 years from June 2011, will continue to give Ty Nant great prominence as the team will sport the logo on the right shirt sleeve. Ty Nant, a founder member of BBWP, has always played a big role in Wales in order to support the community whilst at the same time giving customers the full Welsh experience. Only last year, this brand was selected as the exclusive water of the 2010 Ryder Cup – the first time the event had been staged in Wales. Nick Taylor, General Manager of Bethania-based Ty Nant, said: “Continuing support for the Cardiff Blues is a natural fit for our brand as well as for the team as there is substance to the deal. As with the Ryder Cup’s golfers, the rugby team members are kept hydrated with a regular supply of Ty Nant Natural Mineral Water”. Trystan Bevan, Performance Coordinator for the Cardiff Blues, explains: “We’re delighted by our association with Ty Nant. Our players enjoy the refreshing taste and health benefits that come from drinking a completely natural mineral water. “Drinking water helps the players in many ways: relieving fatigue, reducing cramps through proper hydration and also helps with digestion and regulation of body temperature, which all round leads to better performance. “What’s more, as a Welsh business, with an iconic blue brand and strong reputation for quality and boldness we feel we share a lot in common.” As Ty Nant points out, they have even more in common than just the ‘blue’ theme. The company has for the past four years been producing a special ‘pink’ version of its ‘ice’ PET bottle which is sold in aid of breast cancer causes to which Ty Nant donates via the Pink Ribbon Foundation (reg. charity no.1080839). So Ty Nant’s Nick Taylor describes himself as “tickled pink” by the fact that the Cardiff Blues sometimes play in… pink. He says: “The coincidence only strengthens the tie and the support for the charity underlines Ty Nant’s interest in fashion and health”. For most adults carrying out relatively sedentary jobs, as the majority of us do nowadays, drinking enough water to maintain both body and brain at optimum capacity, is a must. That means, on average, drinking around 1.8 – 2 litres (that’s 8 x 250 ml glasses) of water a day. However, for rugby players to stay on top of the game, these top level players need to ensure correct hydration levels as an essential part of their daily regimen. Jon Williams, Registered Nutritionist for the Cardiff Blues is a fan of Ty Nant Natural Mineral Water. He comments: “Ensuring our players have access to a high quality water source is essential. Ty Nant is a completely natural mineral water that allows them to maintain a good state of hydration, and this has been shown to maximize strength and performance in training For enquiries about Ty Nant Natural Mineral Water call +44 (0) 1974 272111 or visit www.tynant.com Ends NOTES TO EDITORS For information please contact: Jo Jacobius Axiom Communications 020 8347 8206 jo@axiom-uk.com

Make water your bottle of choice for Christmas and New Year

Even a two per cent body loss mass due to dehydration can impair physical and mental performance”, said Bridget Benelam, Senior Nutrition Scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) speaking at a recent conference in London. So drinking around 8 glasses of fluid, preferably water, every day is a good way to stay in shape mentally and physically. http://www.nutrition.org.uk/attachments/441_Benelam.pdf

But it’s not just your physical and mental performance that matters. At this time of year, looking good matters too and one of the best ways to help skin, stressed as it is coping with the freezing outdoors and contrasting overheated rooms. Drinking more fluid, of the non-alcoholic variety, will also help keep skin looking glowing – and if you want to avoid piling on the calories bottled water is a good choice all round.

Of course, bottled water will almost certainly make it onto most shopping lists for what is becoming the traditional post-festive healthy regime this New Year. But British Bottled Water Producers remind us that there nothing like a happy, headache-free Christmas and New Year so you might want to ensure you drink plenty of water before, not just after, 1 January.

British Bottled Water Producers offers a few seasonal tips to make sure that you can raise a glass to good health and, who knows, perhaps ward off that 1st January headache.

  • Water is a bit like chocolate… at least in one respect: if it’s available, we tend to consume it. So make sure that bottled water is readily to hand – especially during parties, heavy meals, just before bedtime and when you are likely to be most dehydrated – as soon as you wake in the morning.

  • Try to drink 8 glasses of water a day even during these cold winter days. Artificial heating and drinking alcohol means that you can become almost as dehydrated as much in winter as on a hot summer’s day.

  • Even mild dehydration can produce unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, lethargy and mood swings. Moderate dehydration can lead to constipation, poor skin and more serious health problems. Water is arguably the best way to avoid these problems.

  • Bottled water is free from chemicals that many of us want to avoid and it contains useful trace minerals. Water companies bottling spring waters and natural mineral waters may only do so if the water is microbiologically safe. In the case of natural mineral waters nothing may be done to alter their natural, wholesome characteristics. This means that these bottled water suppliers must fiercely protect the environment from which the water is drawn, making this one of the few industries that actually has a vested interest in enhancing the countryside and keeping it clean and green.
  • Remember, water is calorie-free so drink to your heart’s content, to make your skin glow and at the same time ensure that your waistline stays as it should. Water is kind to teeth as well and for obvious reasons it’s also a great option for those who are driving this Christmas.

· The evidence is also that water also helps boost your energy levels, prevent a range of minor health problems and also avoid some chronic conditions including kidney stones and some cancers. There is also evidence that a good intake of water is associated with a reduced risk of chronic health conditions. For instance, scientists found that drinking mineral water specifically was associated with a rough halving in the risk of bladder cancer. Water also helps prevent kidney stones, which affect one in ten men and one in twenty women at some point in their lives, causing great pain. Another scientific study found that women consuming five or more glasses of water per day had about half the risk of developing cancer of the colon compared to women consuming two or fewer glasses of water per day.

  • It’s not just you who will benefit from having water stocks in the house this Christmas. Children need even more fluid, as a proportion of their body weight, than adults. According to Vanessa Shaw MBE, Head of Dietetics at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, speaking at the recent BNF conference, “Water depletion is more likely in children”. Children need to ‘learn’ to drink and so often become thirsty and dehydrated if not reminded to consume fluid, says Vanessa Shaw. http://www.nutrition.org.uk/attachments/442_Shaw.pdf

Britons drink over 2 billion litres* of bottled water every year, and most of this is naturally cleansed mineral and spring waters. For information on some of the beset British bottled waters visit www.britishbottledwater.org
