Bottled Water Is A Growth Sector According To The Grocer

◄ ◄ Return to Press Office

The Grocer's Adam Leyland interviewed on Radio Four's Today Programme (20 December 2013) said that bottled water is one of this year's top UK growth sectors.

He put it down to three things:

- The Summer heat-wave of 2013 had reminded people that water is one of the best ways of hydrating;
- There is a shift from energy drinks as consumers realise they don't need added sugar in the diet; and
- Some traditional 'water' brands are offering sparkle and flavour - although it should be mentioned of course that this makes such products 'soft drinks' as defined by the regulations and not 'water'.

Last year (2012) we consumed 2.14 billion litres of bottled water in the UK, the vast majority of it being Natural Mineral Water or Spring Water.

The trend towards healthy eating and drinking means that more people are buying bottled water. We're mostly made of water. Water is life-giving and vital.

In the UK we now buy more than 2 billion litres a year. As we consume more water many people naturally want to know that the water they drink is free from unwanted additives; they want to identify the source of the water; and more and more Britons want to avoid unnecessary ‘food miles’.
